It is like a moment where he just wanted to stay behind the chaos and excuse himself from charging towards certain death, or probably just hitting his head and getting all dizzy, coupled with the stress, confusion, and anxieties he also endured as a soldier. Maybe a mix of all these things led to him not getting up. Just my take on such an iconic scene; a soldier stumbling down physically and mentally.
